DESCRIPTION
In this session, participants will learn about the top soft skills employers want and need. Even when career development is not the central focus, educators can empower students to discover and articulate the transferable skills they build as nontraditional students. HSE prep, survival jobs, raising families, volunteering in their communities, supporting fellow workers, and engaging in civics, build a foundation for work-force readiness. By integrating an understanding of the importance of transferable skills in securing a job, teachers can guide students toward a career pathway. In presenting basic skills and civics in the ABE/ESOL classroom, intentional instruction can assist students in discovering existing transferable skills, building new skills, and highlighting those skills to improve employability. During this workshop, participants will have opportunities for discussion and small-group collaboration. Using a range of classroom materials and first-person accounts from current adult students, educators will be better equipped to help students embrace their unique transferable skills. Attendees will leave with examples and a plan to utilize Essential Education and career pathway strategies more effectively in the classroom. If you do not use Essential Education software, there will still be great takeaways and ideas to implement into any classroom.
